Construction on the Sagrada Família Cathedral (Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família) in Barcelona began in 1882 under the helm of Spanish Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudí, who was a member of the Art Nouveau modernist movement. Art Nouveau occupied a very short time period from around 1890 to 1905, but it’s a movement that inspired later movements throughout the 20th century. Gaudi’s masterpiece is still under construction and not expected to be completed before 2026. Construction has been interrupted several times over.
This wonderful print captures the organic geometry of this building. Although the building’s style defies easy classification, you can definitely see some art nouveau in the organic geometry of the lines in the church as well as this wonderful poster. It has a very aged quality to it but is part of a modern series the artist created of cathedrals drawn entirely in Photoshop.
The Cathedral is one of the most popular destinations in Spain, visited in 2004 by over 2 million people with only a portion of the church open to tourists. Worship services may start later in 2010.
